Ginger: The Wonder Root!
In our practice, we have had the most successes with digestion, bowel and gastrointestinal issues, stomach cramping, and arthritis of the fingers. Many of our pregnant patients have had success with ginger for their nausea symptoms. Many people choose to use it in place of pain relievers. Ginger also helps with people with skin wounds, aiding in the decrease of pus and infected areas. Few contradictions for ginger are people with gallstones and gastric/peptic ulcers. According to a recent symposium at the American Association of Cancer Research, it was shown in a particular study that ginger suppressed cancer cells and cleansed the body of toxins. Although more research is needed, the wonderful effects of ginger are most welcome! Ginger can be taken in whole, liquid, or powder form. It the wonder herb doesn’t appeal to your taste buds, try taking it in capsule form. It is available in most nutritional stores. Adults typically ingest up to 4 grams, although most people take 2-4 grams or 1.5 to 3mL in liquid form per dosage. Ginger in whole form is more preferred, and it is particularly useful and tasty when steeped in hot water with green or white tea. I will share that recipe at the end of this article, in a concoction by many to be known as “Oooss Juice”. Ginger has many other uses beyond medicinal. It has quite versatile in the kitchen as well. Some cultures use it as an ingredient in their wine, various French liquors, candies, teas, curry, and sushi. In the U.S., it is most popular in the production of “ginger ale”, “gingerbread men cookies”, cakes, jellies, jams, and other delicious confections and flavorings. Consider adding ginger to your favorite stir-fry, dressing, salads, and even barbecue sauce! As evidenced by above, ginger is quite the versatile and wondrous herb! Its many health and symptom fighting components make it quite successful and popular. From digestive issues to fighting inflammation and bloating, ginger can help people of all ages. As mentioned above, one of my favorite concoctions with ginger is Oooss Juice, which is listed below: • Use high quality, heat retaining, stainless steel 2-4 gallon Pot. • Boil 1 gallon of water; add ˝ pound of sliced ginger; lightly boil for 5 minutes; turn and keep off. • Add 2-6 organic green tea bags, steep for 30-60 minutes, then take out. • After 4-12 hours, strain out ginger, place juice in glass jar and cool in fridge; drink cold or re-heat.
